COACH GENEVIEVE:  she cares

Coach Genevieve

dedication: A most important word

Genevieve always gives 200% to anything she tries, with a determined glint in her eye. Her dedication to setting new goals and never giving up, coupled with her readiness to take on new challenges, has been the key to her success. You could say it's her secret ingredient, much like a good spoonful of sugar! The Extraordinary Tale of Coach Genevieve.

coach genevieve cares

As the founder and president of SNAPtivities, she's been working her practical magic for over 35 years, casting a cheerful spell on more than 45,000 children. Her journey began in middle school in Bloomfield Hills when she started teaching Super Saturday classes and coaching Soccer School For Little Folks.

and SNAP, she knew!

Her passion for working with children through sports continued through high school and college, as she designed, initiated, and directed new sports and programs. There were soccer matches, basketball games, floor hockey tournaments, and even jolly arts & crafts and "design your own" classes and oh, so much more!

  • Soccer School for Little Folks: For 40 years, Genevieve taught three-to-six-year-olds the fundamentals of soccer. She sang a cheerful tune while helping them learn, and eventually passed the delightful school along to embark on a new adventure.

and in 1999 ---- SNAP!

It was almost a new decade, and she began hearing whispers of this new sport called NFL Flag Football. A new chapter began!

  • SNAP Flag Football: With a snap of her fingers, she started the first flag football league in Bloomfield Hills! It began with a mere 80 players and has since grown to over 1,500, spreading its cheer to players from neighboring school districts and private schools. For over 25 years, she has run these leagues through Birmingham Community Education and Bloomfield Hills Recreation, where over half the profits go directly back into the public school districts.
  • She added the delightful Little Snappers and the spirited Bitty Blitzers for two-and-a-half-to-four-and-a-half-year-olds, and these programs have been a resounding success, much to everyone's delight. You see, the parents find it as practically perfect as the players!

but hmmmmm.....

But she struggled with the girls. Every year she would try to get girls to sign up for the league. It worked in some years. She even had all-girl teams, and the boys were always amazed at how good the girls were. But it was slow.

And once again, SNAP!

  • Girls Take the Field: In 2020, Genevieve created a wonderfully important and first-of-its-kind league in the state: an All-Girls League. This program ensures every girl has her chance to shine, just like a star in the sky! With the help of amazing, dedicated coaches and good public relations, it took off like a lark ascending. And with flag football now becoming an Olympic sport and colleges offering scholarships to women, we only have one way to go, and that's up!

education:  Her book of knowledge

  • BS in Organizational Business, Oakland University
  • Master in Education, Oakland University
  • The School of Life

community:  her social circle

Genevieve is a well-known and much-loved figure in the Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills communities. She believes that networking is a vital part of her strategy, and she's always ready to offer a cheerful "what do you love?" to someone new. She reminds everyone—her team, players, parents, coaches, instructors and referees—that community is at the heart of all good things.

mentoring:  molding young minds

She is always willing to help mold young minds, working with many young players and referees who were once under her care. She's a master at guiding her team from behind the scenes, training them to be their best and placing them in positions where their talents can truly flourish. If you're interested in an internship opportunity, give her a whistle!

Her objective is to provide more than just a sports class. Her goal has always been, and is still today, to equip children with important life-skills such as agility, coordination, balance, listening, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

not just a coach but a champion for all

Genevieve played college soccer at Michigan State before transferring to Oakland University to be closer to her passion for coaching travel soccer teams at the highest levels for over 20 years. Her steadfast commitment to sports and equality led her to play a key role at Oakland U. in transforming a club team into a Division II team, righting a wrong with a good dose of courage and fairness. She still holds records for the most game-winning goals and the first goal in Oakland University history as a Division II team, something that can never be beaten!
